Philosophy

Growing up in the Texas Panhandle, I have witnessed the values and challenges unique to this region, particularly where opportunities for work outside of the agriculture and energy industries can be scarce. Despite these challenges, I am convinced that the wealth of knowledge within our community can be harnessed to guide those willing to learn and gain valuable experiences.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student deserves an opportunity to pursue their chosen path. I believe in emphasizing the understanding of lessons and empowering students to find their direction in the world.

Values and Beliefs About Teaching

In my teaching journey, I will employ a student-based learning approach, recognizing the uniqueness of student learning styles. I will prioritize creating a safe space where every student's voice is heard. Technological advancements have expanded the possibilities for inclusive learning environments, acknowledging that traditional classrooms may not cater to everyone's needs.

The evolving nature of knowledge underscores my belief in lifelong learning. The field of communications, in which I specialize, has transformed significantly over the years, emphasizing the importance of adapting to change and continuous improvement. Respect for others is a core value, fostering an environment where diverse views are acknowledged, and empathy is embraced.

Core Objectives and Goals

My teaching methods encompass a variety of approaches, including lectures, discussions, peer teaching, collaborative projects, real-world applications, and mind mapping. Lectures prepare students for discussions, while peer teaching and collaborative projects encourage active participation, team building, and knowledge demonstration. These methods aim to provide a holistic learning experience that extends beyond traditional memorization.

Policies and Processes to Achieving Goals

Learning objectives are central to each lesson, guiding students on what to expect and providing a roadmap for the course. The practical application of knowledge is emphasized, preparing students for challenges beyond their immediate careers. Open-ended questions, online forums, and discussion questions serve as metrics for understanding the depth of students' comprehension.

Preparation is key, and as an instructor, I ensure that students are adequately prepared for discussions. Clear communication and feedback contribute to an open and engaging learning environment. Consistent lesson preparation enables effective communication and fosters dialogue for successful learning.

Measurements of Student Learning

Assessing student learning involves active approaches such as classroom discussions, projects, and presentations (Socratic method). Unlike traditional testing, these methods encourage critical thinking a deeper understanding of the material, and increased engagement. Clear rubrics, collaboration, feedback incorporation, and adaptability, ensure transparency in assessment criteria.

Self-evaluation is equally important, and by assessing my teaching methods, communication skills, and responsiveness to student needs, I can strive to continually enhance my effectiveness as an instructor.

To summarize, my teaching philosophy is a product of personal values and experiences. By incorporating student-centric approaches, fostering a diverse and respectful learning environment, and employing dynamic assessment methods, I aim to equip students with the skills and mindset necessary for their unique educational journeys.
